Acerola: the tropical Barbados cherry Our acerola comes from a tropical fruit native to Central America, the Caribbean and northern South America. The shrub or small tree bears orange-red to bright-red fruit. Our range identifies the botanical material as Malpighia glabra; the commercial name acerola is also used for Malpighia emarginata. Accurate botanical identification is therefore an important part of raw-material control. From fresh fruit to powder The fruits are selected, cleaned and processed into a concentrated raw material, then dried to a powder. Vitamin C is sensitive to air, light, heat and moisture. Processing and drying conditions, airtight packaging and careful storage consequently matter for preserving the finished product. What does 25% vitamin C mean? Our acerola extract is standardised to 25% vitamin C: each gram of powder provides 250 mg vitamin C. This is a composition specification, not a recommended daily serving. The correct portion depends on the current label and total vitamin C consumed through food and other supplements. More than ascorbic acid Acerola fruit naturally contains polyphenols, flavonoids, phenolic acids, anthocyanins and carotenoids. Various other vitamins and minerals may also be present in the fruit. Only vitamin C is standardised to 25% in this product; no guaranteed amounts are stated for the other constituents. Pure powder, not capsules The product is powdered acerola fruit extract without added sugar, processing aids, preservatives or synthetic flavours, colours or fragrances. Each pack contains 270 grams of powder. This is a fruit extract rather than a mushroom extract and is not supplied in capsules. The roles of vitamin C Vitamin C contributes to normal immune function and helps protect cells from oxidative stress. It supports normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin, blood vessels, bones, cartilage, gums and teeth. Vitamin C contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism, reduces tiredness and fatigue, supports the nervous system, increases iron absorption and helps regenerate the reduced form of vitamin E. These are recognised functions of the nutrient, not claims that acerola treats diseases. Preparation and combinations Measure the powder according to the directions on the current package. It may be mixed into cool or lukewarm food or drinks; avoid prolonged heating because vitamin C is sensitive to temperature. Acerola can be used alongside our individual mushroom products, but is not automatically included in mushroom bundles. This does not establish that acerola enhances the medical effects of mushrooms.
